Apparently, today is the 10th Anniversary of Mean Girls. I guess that means it’s time to admit something I’ve been afraid to for 10 years:
I don’t like Mean Girls.
Even I don’t understand why. I love Tina Fey. I love comedies. I love high school movies. I don’t hate Lindsay Lohan (unpopular opinion: I don’t hate Lindsay Lohan.)
My favorite high school set movies – Can’t Hardly Wait, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That – came out in the ’90s, when I was in Jr High. High school was an idea, something to romanticize. When Mean Girls came out, I was finishing up my first year in college. I was over high school drama like burn books (we called them slam books, btw) and cliques.
I’ve tried watching since, thanks to the many airings on cable. I was determined to appreciate it like everyone else on the Internet. But, I think that bitter mood from 2004 soured every subsequent viewing.
Time stop trying to make Mean Girls happen. It’s not gonna happen.
